History of Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

Years ago, two ambitious individuals, William Rockhill Nelson, founder of The Kansas City Star and Mary McAfee Atkins, Kansas City school teacher, had the mutual dream of providing a public art museum for Kansas City. Mr. Nelson died in 1915, to fulfill his dream,  William Rockhill Nelson Trust was established for the purchase of numerous artworks. 

A few years later, Ms. Mary provided about one-third of her million-dollar estate to purchase the land for a public art museum in Kansas. Afterward, these two states were joined to establish the museum that was named “Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art” in 1933 that turned out to be one of the finest encyclopedic art museums located in America.

In 2007, to display more art collection, the Baloch building was unveiled, which was designed by Steven Holl Architects.
